Andrea Hence Evans, Esq. launched the intellectual property law practice, The Law Firm of Andrea Hence Evans, LLC. Attorney Evans career path is unique since she worked at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for 5 years as both a patent examiner and a trademark examining attorney after graduating from law school.
While working as a Trademark Examining Attorney, she examined all types of trademarks including design marks, word marks, Madrid applications, and configuration trademark applications to determine eligibility for registration on the Principal or Supplemental Register. This examination included conducting a search using the USPTO automated search tools to determine whether the applicant’s mark was similar to prior pending applications and also whether the goods or services were closely related to registrant’s such that there is a likelihood of confusion as defined under Trademark Act Section 2(d). Extensive legal research was also conducted to determine whether or not the applicant’s proposed mark was descriptive, misdescriptive, a surname, geographically descriptive or geographically misdescriptive as defined under Trademark Act Sections 2(e)(1), 2(e)(2), 2(e)(3) and 2(e)(4), respectively.
Prior to working as a Trademark Examining Attorney, Attorney Evans began her career at the USPTO as a Patent Examiner. As a Patent Examiner, she examined patent applications in the electrical and mechanical engineering areas featuring printing, keyboards and time measuring devices. She researched prior art using USPTO automated tools to determine whether the applications complied with patent laws and rules such as novelty (Section 102) and obviousness (Section 103). She is extremely familiar with patent and trademark policies, procedures and USPTO guidelines.

I wish I could say that I took a flying leap into business ownership, but the truth is that I was pushed (really hard)! You see, I was laid off from my cushy corporate job with a Fortune 500 company shortly after my father became a quadriplegic. The demands for my dad’s care were physically and financially overwhelming for me and my sisters; I was forced to forge a new path for my career and for my life.
I needed to earn a considerable amount of loot to help with household expenses, but the demands of my personal life would not allow me to work a traditional job with “normal hours.” So I decided to do some short-term consulting work from home until I figured things out. More than a decade later, I’m still at it and enjoying every second of this incredibly bumpy, but even more fulfilling, ride.
Now that I’ve shared my story, it will shed some florescent light on why my small business coaching services are focused on helping other women do what I’ve done. Being a business owner can offer great flexibility and unlimited earning potential without forcing you to give up the things that are most important to you.
But there’s a catch — in order to maximize your results, you’ve got to be willing to work your ass off and be totally honest about your sh*t. That’s how I roll! Not So Hoity Toity Anymore
After suffering from a major burnout, I decided to take a hiatus from marketing to figure out the tangled mess in my head. With no customers blowing up my phone lines, I found time to do other things, and I began to chronicle my personal challenges on a blog.
To my utter surprise and dismay, my quips, quotes and stories quickly attracted an immense and devout social media following. In the beginning, I had no idea what to do with all those folks clambering to read my musings. But I KNEW I had a responsibility to do something AMAZING!! I just HAD to!
I chose to lean in to one of my passions (love & relationships) and launched a website called Black Love Forum (BLF), an initiative dedicated to creating healthy relationships in the Black community. And just 10 months later, I launched a companion print publication (Black Love Mag). Content from the BLF Media outlet has been featured on Essence.com and MadameNoire.com and the site has been listed as one of the Top 10 African American Dating Sites by DatingAdvice.com. But there was still a tugging feeling that was urging me to do more.
That’s when I realized that I had been a bit short-sighted in embracing my passions; I had only embarked on one aspect of my calling. This realization prompted me to dig deeper into my calling.
After months of discord in my spirit, I FINALLY realized that my calling was not only in the realm of romantic love, but included the love of authentic living. I knew I had to create a way of life not just for myself, but for all women who needed to embrace their lives without fear or apologies.
In 2012 I founded Emotional Nudity (ENL), a lifestyle brand for women who want to love and live a life with Authentic Joy. Within six months, the ENL brand made a big splash when my content landed on Huffington Post, and Mommy Noire followed as a result of my personal appearances in Essence Magazine and on BET and HuffPost Live. Currently I’m a regular contributor to Essence.com.
The Accidental Inspiration…
The first time someone referred to me as an INSPIRATION, I thought it was a fluke. But then it happened more and more often. All I can say to that is that I never intended to be an inspiration, I only had plans to live as honestly and openly as possible in order to help others. I always say that I’m an “accidental inspiration.” I can never take personal credit for my success because I consider myself an OBEDIENT VESSEL and I believe my current work is my divine calling, and it is my honor to serve.

After being out of school for 20+ years, I decided it was now or never to return to school and fulfill part two of my childhood dream of being first a dancer and then a doctor! So, in my 40’s I began taking the necessary pre-requisite courses to apply to medical school. At some point I stopped worrying about what others thought or if I was too old and to focus on doing everything I could do and if I did not get in, I would at least know that I did everything in my power. Well here’s what happened:
Dr. Penn is currently the Director of Service Integration with Ocean Health Initiatives, a Federally Qualified Health Center based in Monmouth and Ocean Counties in NJ; Staff physician with Medimorphosis, Physician Assisted Weight Loss and formerly served as the Acting Medical Director for Quality Community Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Philadelphia. During her Residency in Family Medicine, she served as Chief Resident in Family Practice Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital/North Philadelphia Hospital System (2012-2013); National Health Corps Scholar(2002-present); Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine(2014-present); Faculty, Center for Mind Body Medicine, Washington, DC(2013-present); Mind Body Skills Group Facilitator; Nationally Certified Health, Wellness, and Fitness Coach (Wellcoaches Inc.); Nationally Certified Personal Trainer; (National Council on Strength and Fitness); Certified Yoga Instructor; member of the National QiGong Association; Reiki Master/Teacher; and Health Correspondent for WURD radio and host of her podcast, Mind, Body, and Spirit Medicine with Dr. Carol Penn. Dr. Penn is a graduate of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (formerly University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey, School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ/SOM).
Dr. Carol Penn is a physician board certified in both Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine with a focus on mind body medicine; arts medicine; and nutrition medicine emphasizing prevention and wellness to optimize human potential. Additionally, Dr. Penn, has a strong interest in integrative approaches to palliative care medicine and is a published researcher in End of Life Care and Mind Body Medicine. A popular and frequently sought-after national speaker, Dr. Penn’s book, Meditation in a Time of Madness is due to be published in January.
Equally passionate about holistic birthing practices, Dr. Penn served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Lamaze International for 12 years and continues to teach prepared childbirth education classes to encourage and support families embracing self-care from the beginning of life.
Prior to beginning her career in medicine, Dr. Penn, an award-winning choreographer, trained in New York City with the world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as a performing artist and an educator. In the company’s acclaimed Children’s School, she applied her passion for healing, working with Ailey’s Visually Impaired Program for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Dr. Penn received her BS in Dance Education and MA in Humanities from New York University.
Dr. Penn was selected from a national pool of applicants to become a Teaching Fellow at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. While in DC she formed her company Pennvisions and The New Visions Dance Theater. She won numerous awards for her choreography, became tenured faculty in the DC Public Schools and served as International Consultant for the Kennedy Center’s Very Special Arts Program.
Dr. Penn is co-founder and director of The Core of Fire, an interfaith women’s dance ensemble.
